The Story Behind "Wooden Heart" 🪵❤️
"’Cause I don’t have a wooden heart..."
This yarn holds a very special place in my heart. If you've been following my Workshop Diaries on YouTube, you might have seen me with my arms in dye baths, music playing in the background. I love getting carried away by old classics, and one day, Elvis Presley's "Wooden Heart" from 1960 snuck into my speakers.
Before I knew it, I was humming along – and right there, amidst the music, the colors for this yarn began to form in my mind.
The Atmosphere Turned into Thread
For me, "Wooden Heart" is about a very special, nostalgic coziness. I wanted to capture the warmth and depth that Elvis sings with and translate it directly into the wool.
The Warm Wooden Tones: I found inspiration for the rich, earthy brown and golden/orange hues in the yarn from the old marionettes and the beautiful wooden box from the iconic puppet show scene in the movie G.I. Blues. They remind me of the scent of polished wood and memories that last.
The Beating Heart: But the yarn couldn't be too dark or heavy. Because, as Elvis sings: "...'cause I don't have a wooden heart." That's why I've let delicate beige and soft rose tones gently intertwine with the brown colors. It's the beating, warm heart that breaks through the hard wood.
When I dye this quality, it happens in small, loving batches. I love standing and watching how the shades slowly absorb the color and settle as soft shadows over the warm wool. Every single skein is a small, unique work of art that I've held in my hands many times before it reaches you.
A Small Journey Back in Time
Did you know that the melody actually comes from an old German folk song from the 1800s? It's called "Muss i denn zum Städtele hinaus", and it's about a young man who has to leave his beloved but promises to take care of her heart.
When Elvis recorded it in 1960, he had just been stationed as a soldier in Germany. He even kept the German lines in the song, and when he sings it to the sweet German girl and the marionettes in the movie, everything just comes together in a higher unity of pure nostalgia.
